Around our town

Hello to all of you Marshall Mountain Wave readers and greetings from the jewel of the Ozarks, Leslie, Arkansas. While Spring seems to be springing, Winter seems to want to make a little bit of a comeback like it left the room but still has something to say, “and another thing”. We have had a couple of days of frost on the ground and very cold in the mornings, but it has been warming up in the afternoons but that old North Wind has been blowing so there is quite a nip in the air. The redbuds have been on full display this week. I just love the light magenta color that punctuate the scenery. My Nanking Cherry has made it through the past few frosty mornings, it has not bloomed yet but is on the verge of blooming. I just hope it waits until the possibility of frost has passed. We have sweet potato and Ube sweet potatoes set up in jars of water to get them to make slips to plant. Folks have been working in the gardens getting them turned under and ready to plant for the upcoming season. I am looking forward to seeing what folks are going to be growing. Because all of the seed catalogs are out and all my neighbors who garden have pouring of them dreaming of all the seeds and plants that they are going to grow. I know a lot of people in the area who grow a majority of the food that they eat in their gardens. Now the folks that I know that do that their whole life working their gardens and vegetable tunnels. They also grow a huge number of biodiverse crops. Much like the victory gardens that everyone in the country grew during WWII. The goal was to grow as much diverse food as you can in a small plot of land. I love that Leslie is a little grandma gardening town that keeps that tradition alive.

Sayings The best sayings, it goes without saying, are in the Bible. But since those are right there for everyone to read, I thought I would give some of my favorites that not everyone may have run across. These distill truth down into a form you can remember, and I love collecting them. I will put the author if I know it, because the credit is deserved.

South Mountain/Nubbin Hill news

March 27, 2024 Here we are with another chilly day. We had frost here last night, down to 30 degrees, and it killed Ray’s 3 tomato plants, and 2 pepper plants. Well, that happens. He covered them with a bucket, but it got them anyway. He thinks everything else survived. So, now he has Potatoes, squash, green beans all planted, and lettuce, onions, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, egg plant are up and so far surviving. After tonight we think we might be safe. Don’t count on it for sure!

Hope that everyone had a good week. Monday the weather was nice. I was outside a lot. I put some more dirt on my flowers. David and Melissa helped Larry move some gates so Larry could feed his cows down by the road. Thanks guys. David plowed my garden.
