The old barn outside my motherâs house is mostly just a shell these days, with holes all around and the boards leaning every which way and metal roofing clapping in every breeze. But back in the late 50âs and early 60âs, it was home to a family of fourteen â two parents, eight boys and their four sisters. Charles Dye, another Cozyhome old-timer, was born in Marshall, but lived in that barn with his brothers, sisters, and parents until he was 14 and they moved to a cabin out past Rock Creek. The family later traded that property to the Stills family so they could move closer to Rock Creek on the Aunt Faye Road. While living in that barn, Charles remembers getting drinking and cooking water from the Turkey Pen Springs and catching rainwater in the cistern for laundry and baths. When bringing relatives to see the old homesite one day, he pointed out where the old cook stove once sat, where the fire happened, and where their access to the attic for sleeping was located.
