Fall 2024 Dean’s List

Education is one of our greatest tools as humans and we should encourage and celebrate it as often as we can. With that in mind, let’s congratulate the Searcy County students who accomplished excellent grades this past semester and were put on the Dean’s List at these different schools.

Did you know?

Reading is a beloved pastime that can positively affect cognitive health and even help to reduce stress. Though those benefits are largely associated with adults, reading can be equally beneficial to children, even those who have yet to learn how to read. According to the Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, infants pick up on language earlier than researchers once realized, and hearing language is important as their brains prepare them to speak. Reading also supports word learning and preliteracy skills in older children. The ECLKC notes that when adults read to children, they typically speak words they would not otherwise use in typical discourse. That helps children expand their vocabularies, even before they learn to read on their own.

Memories and Meals

Food carries memories and emotions. It carries feelings of love and memories of loved ones both here and gone. My grandmother believed this and she wanted to share those memories and emotions with my sister and me. She did this by filling two composition notebooks, one for my sister and one for me, with handwritten recipes from our extended family members. These recipes have helped keep my grandmother’s memory and love alive after she passed. In order to share this I have typed 4 of her recipes that she shared with us.

The Cozyhome Connection

The old barn outside my mother’s house is mostly just a shell these days, with holes all around and the boards leaning every which way and metal roofing clapping in every breeze. But back in the late 50’s and early 60’s, it was home to a family of fourteen – two parents, eight boys and their four sisters. Charles Dye, another Cozyhome old-timer, was born in Marshall, but lived in that barn with his brothers, sisters, and parents until he was 14 and they moved to a cabin out past Rock Creek. The family later traded that property to the Stills family so they could move closer to Rock Creek on the Aunt Faye Road. While living in that barn, Charles remembers getting drinking and cooking water from the Turkey Pen Springs and catching rainwater in the cistern for laundry and baths. When bringing relatives to see the old homesite one day, he pointed out where the old cook stove once sat, where the fire happened, and where their access to the attic for sleeping was located.

Animal Shelters

Data from the ASPCA¨ indicates that roughly 6.3 million companion animals enter animal shelters in the United States each year. A nearly equal number of dogs (3.1 million) and cats (3.2 million) make up that population, and roughly twothirds of those shelter animals are eventually adopted each year. But the landscape for shelter animals is fluid, and the first half of 2023 was proof of that. According to the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, dog intakes at animal shelters had increased by 4 percent during the first two quarters of 2023 compared to the same period the year prior. During that same time, cat intakes had declined by roughly 1 percent. One possible reason for the higher intake of dogs is related to how prospective dog owners begin their search. A recent analysis of Google Trends found that the search term ‘buy a dog’ is now as common as the term ‘adopt a dog.’ By choosing to adopt rather than buy a dog, prospective dog owners could save a dog’s life and help often overburdened local adoption shelters looking to ensure dogs in their care end up in safe and happy homes.

Casey’s Construction

About a year ago Mayor Elliot made some connections with the individuals who owned and worked the land plot across from Daisy Queen in order to start a project for the town of Marshall. Casey’s General Stores are popping up all over the place giving fuel and convenience to the general population. This is the project that Mayor Elliot has brought to Marshall, AR. With the intent to bring in jobs Mayor Elliot searched for businesses wanting to expand and found Casey’s. Kevin Elliot expects positive reactions with the addition of Casey’s. He predicts that a brand name like Casey’s will attract more customers because of its recognizability and convenience. The addition of a business such as this requires fire protection. Another fire hydrant will be installed on that side of the road to ensure fire protection. Mayor Elliot eventually wants to expand the South side of Marshall in addition to the North side. With the estimated end date of April 17, 2025, let’s welcome the new jobs and new opportunities Marshall will experience in the new year.

Snowball News

As I type this we are expecting our first winter storm. There’s always some excitement about snow, no school, snowmen, sledding, but there’s a lot of us that are also farmers and ranchers and snow brings zero excitement. Snow is always fun for a little while, but when you think about the toll that the added work brings to folks caring for livestock, it’s not that fun. The cold snap we’ve just had has been a royal pain. I’ve busted ice for critters every morning and every night. I’ve gotten where I’ve just taken horse water buckets inside the barn to thaw during the day.
