Hello to all of you Marshall Mountain Wave readers and greetings from the jewel of the Ozarks, Leslie, Arkansas. It seems as though Spring is springing. The weather has been rather mild this week with much warmer temperatures and some rain, not as much as we have had lately but enough to keep everything muddy. The flower parade seems to be starting early this year starting with of course the jonquils which I Love jonquils. They are so bright and cheery and I have bundles of them all over my house this time of year. My crocus burst into bloom this week in their deep rich purple I actually have the kind of crocus that they get saffron from, which is the Crocus Sativus. It is one of the most expensive spices in the world by weight. It has the most intense aromatic flavor and just one little piece of it will flavor a whole pot of rice or curry. I harvest mine early in the morning when they first open. I carefully cut the flower and gently pull out the flower stamen which is the spice of the plant. This year I will have a bumper crop of saffron. My forsythia has blooms all on it and the trees have little buds on them. I am hoping everything that is blooming now does not get killed by a hard frost. The garden has turnips that are wanting to bolt and the garlic and onions and leeks are looking great. My neighbors who garden have their cold frames just bursting with goodness in the form of greens. They are also getting their greenhouses stocked up getting ready for the coming planting season.
