Veterans Voice

On November 11, we celebrated Veterans Day with two different programs. One at 11 a.m. on 11/11 at the Memorial Hall. Mary Jaeger gave a fascinating speech outlining the history of military service in her family; it was a fascinating history and well presented. At the end of the program, John Eaton was recognized for his years of service to our Searcy County veterans; John has played Taps for our veterans for many years. The Salute To Veterans at OHAC began at 7 p.m. Our Marshall High School Band and Choir performed and it was inspiring to see our young people honoring our veterans. The program ended with Tom Wimberley and Harold Young doing a comedy skit. All in all, it was a wonderful day honoring our veterans for their service and sacrifice in serving our nation.

Fall Chores If there is a legal limit on leaves, we are over it. I’m good with that, actually, since they a) are the source of all that fall beauty there is to rave over b) mulch for basically everything and c) a source of good fun and entertaining workouts.

This year, we have nearly 203,000 military veterans in Arkansas; 51,000 of them served since 9/11; 35,000 served during the Gulf War; 41,000 served during peacetime; 64,000 served during the Vietnam War; and 8,000 served during the Korean conflict.

Before I get to gushing about fall, which is only right, let me give an update on the chickens lest you worry about them cooped up in a coop with no run or door to get there. They now have a nice big chicken run and by maneuvering through the goat fence, managed to take on the boy goats’ pen as well.

Washington Update

On Veterans Day, we take time to reflect on and honor all of those who wore our nation’s uniform. They bravely served our country on battlefields and military installations around the world. These men and women are all too familiar with spending countless hours at work and many nights away from their families. How we treat our veterans defines us as a nation. This patriotic day should renew our commitment that we will always have their backs.
