4H in Searcy County a Rich Past and Promising Future
Searcy County, with its picturesque location and a history rich in agriculture, timber, and industry, has it people to thank for that rich history. As individuals we become the people we are because of the influences of faith, family, and community. One youth organization that has played a part in this for many years is 4-H clubs. Many of us have fond memories of how 4-H may have influenced anything from personal hobbies to life skills that we have used throughout our lives and careers. Whether it is a fear of getting up in front of people, developing a new skill, or the development of critical thinking, 4-H can help. Many are under the impression that 4-H is about agriculture and showing at the county or state fair but 4H can be and is so much more. The four H’s we emphasize in 4H are: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. The Emphasis is designed to prepare young people to step up to the challenges in their communities and provide youth with the skills to lead for a lifetime. The core elements of 4-H include youth leadership, youth-adult partnerships, life skills learning, and community service. 4 H programs are grounded in the belief that youth learn best by doing. 4-H members complete hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture, and citizenship in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. The Beauty of the 4-H structure is that it can be tailored to fit individuals interests and schedules.
Big Flat Buzz
Welcome back. I hope your 2024 is better than ours! Daddy was back in hospital for a day. It seems as if he had another stroke...mild one...but another one. It scares me to bits but things will work out, I hope.

What time is it? Not break time but making your New Year’s Resolutions time. The most popular New Year’s tradition is making resolutions, yet research suggests only 9% of Americans actually keep those commitments.
Around our town
Hello to all of you Marshall Mountain Wave readers and greetings from the jewel of the Ozarks, Leslie, Arkansas. I hope you all had a safe and festive New Year so far. It has been very sunny and cold this past week. The time of year where you can feel the difference in temperatures from when you are in the direct sun and when you are in the shade. The north wind is really cold and sharp. You can really feel it on Main Street where the corridor formed by the buildings downtown seems to focus the cold wind and make it colder. The weather as of the writing of this column has not been too wintery yet but that remains to be seen, we did have 9 days of foggy mornings in August after all. Then there are the wooly worms with heavy coats and the spoons in the persimmon seeds to consider. I know all of that is folklore, but I enjoy it. I am one to make New Years Resolutions. I believe that if you set no goals you have nothing to reach for. I am, however, much clearer what my intentions are. For instance in the past, I have made a resolution to be more kind and have more patience. For that whole year it seemed like everything tried my kindness and patience. The unexpected growth from all of that is I learned to make and keep better boundaries with people. Like at one time if someone asked me “can you do me a favor” I used to say “sure what is it” which kind of puts in into a contract to do what the person asked you to do. Now I have learned to say “What would you have me say or do?” So I can think about it, to see if I want to make that social contract to do that favor. That way I don’t blindly agree to do someone a favor. I know a lot of folks might say to that what if the person gets mad at me for not complying with their request of a favor. To that I say people who get mad at you having a boundary are the ones profiting from you not having them. So this year my resolution is to create abundance so much that I have abundance to share and to be a force of peace
