Born to learn “I didn’t know he had it in him.” How many times have you heard this statement after someone earned an achievement? When a young Bruce Springsteen attended school as a boy in Freehold, New Jersey, he felt he didn’t fit inside the box. He said in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning a few years ago, “I was probably one of the smartest kids in my class at the time. Except you would’ve never known it, because where my intelligence lay was not able to be tapped within that particular system. And I didn’t know how to do it myself until music came along and opened me up not just to the world of music but to the world period, you know, to the events of the day. To the connection between culture and society and those were things that riveted me, engaged me in in life,” Springsteen said. “Gave me a sense of purpose. What I wanted to do. Who I wanted to be. The way that I wanted to do it. What I thought I could accomplish through singing songs.” I imagine several of Springsteen’s former teachers said, “I didn’t know he had it in him” when “Born to Run” hit No. 3 on the Billboard charts in 1975.

Expensive entertainment I can be appalled at the incomes our entertainers can afford. The worst thing about it is how it reflects our value system, teachers toward the low end, actors and ballplayers at the top. I read on the internet (so it has to be right) that Americans average spending $2971/ year on entertainment per household. That seems like a lot to me. But before I get on my high horse, I have to admit I’m funding a high-priced source of entertainment.

Snowball news

It’s 5:30 AM on Monday. I haven’t the slightest clue what went on in Snowball over the weekend or anything that happened last week. We spent the weekend in a little town of Freeburg Illinois letting Whitley perfect hanging off her horse upside down. We did get a little down time on Saturday and took in a neat place called Eckhart’s, which offered all sorts of fresh produce and strawberry picking. Although it was neat, I wouldn’t recommend the trip just for the strawberries.

I can really make some booboos. In my column the week after Jason passed away and was thanking everyone, I didn’t even mention the two preachers, our nephew Larry Anthony Housley who read the obituary and our grandson, Scott Housley who did the preaching, and did a great job. Another grandson, Lane Housley has always said he wanted to say a few things at his grandpa’s funeral. Anyway, guys I am so sorry and hope you will forgive me. It took everyone and everything that was done to make it the beautiful service that it was.

I heard a whippoorwill hollering Monday evening. This morning I had about six goldfinches in the backyard. The hummingbirds have all arrived. I have two 80-ounce feeders. One day last week I put 4 cups of nectar in both of them. By the next evening one was empty and the other was half empty. Last night I put 7 cups or 56 ounces in both feeders. They have already eaten about 1/3 of that. The orioles are putting away the grape jelly. The other day one of the orioles was hanging on the bottom of one of the hummingbird feeders. I have not seen the purple martins as much the last couple weeks, but they are still here.
