Snowball news

I’m not sure how to start this week’s column. One, I’m out of practice, and two, how do I follow Susie and Jacque? Susie knew everything that was happening in the community and Jacque referenced songs. I’ll do my best! Thank you, ladies, for covering for me!

The March 7, 1930 paper told of an unfortunate accident that had happened to Mrs. S C Greenhaw. While returning home from town Mrs. S C Greenhaw had the misfortune of falling from the sidewalk on the hill near the town water tank. She sprained her left ankle badly. She was assisted home in the College Addition as the injury was quite severe and painful. She was deterred from doing any housework because of the injury. Her young daughter Miss Bonnie was with her at the time, but was unable to prevent the accident from happening. I am wondering where the water tank was at that time. At one time the tank was up on Backbone Mountain, but previously I believe I read that the tank was near the Heard residence near Range Street. I will certainly be watching the old papers to see what I can find out.

South Mountain/Nubbin Hill news

Hello to you on a beautiful Sunday evening! Today has been a perfect example of perfect weather! I loved it. I told Ray I could do this kind of weather all year long! We went to church this morning and this evening I have cleaned out the car and truck, swept the porch and went for a ride in the side by side! It has been so nice to be outside. Didn’t even take a nap today! Now you know something is up if I don’t take a nap on Sunday afternoon. I was so sleepy this morning I thought I would take a nap when I got home from church, but no, it was just too nice outside to take a nap inside. Maybe I’ll sleep well tonight. I hope you have enjoyed today as much as I have!

Hello to all of you Marshall Mountain Wave readers and greetings from the jewel of the Ozarks, Leslie, Arkansas. It has been cold and dreary this week not a lot of rain just overcast and cold. It is supposed to be cold this coming week as well. I am just longing for warmer days of spring to arrive.

Chimes news

Hello again after the good rain we got Monday night and Tuesday, it has turned cool again. I think it is supposed to get warmer again in a day or two. The celebration of life for our cousin G.W. (George) Mathis of Chandler, Arizona was on Saturday March 19 at the First Baptist Church in Chandler. He was the son of the late Jona and Ola Mathis. He married his high school sweetheart, Jimmie Sue Carter and raised their family of five children in Arizona where they were both schoolteachers. He was the last of 10 children to go home to be with the Lord and all his loved ones. We extend prayers and sympathy to all his family. His wife, Jimmie Sue passed away a few months ago.

Snowball news

Greetings from Snowball! Spring seems to be taking a “long and winding road” to our doors. I’m ready for it to stop being so timid and come to stay for a while. Everywhere we see tempting signs of daffodils (some already faded), leaves budding out, flies and ticks. My horses look like huge puffs balls of flying, nose tickling hair. As one of my favorite Simon and Garfunkel songs declared, “April, come she will – when streams are ripe and swelled with rain…” the Buffalo River continues to delight and challenge us all. Fishermen and floaters are seen often, headed toward solitude and dinner and horsemen are watching the area water levels in hopes of crossing to the trail on the other side. Gardeners are even more busy digging, adding dirt and compost and laying out new spots for potatoes, onions and tasty vegetables. Spring breaks have come and gone and it’s time to knuckle down again to finish this school semester (sorry, kids) … It’s a good time to alive and outside (most of the time). Other times, we savor the last fire in the fireplace and shiver the last few times – we hope – before glorious warm weather becomes normal for a change. Busy activities have started to reach Snowball as well. A few to add to your calendars include the following: April 23 – Delano Taylor Memorial Trail Ride – A
