SCSD Students heading back to school

Summer is winding down and the start of a new school year at Searcy County school district is in sight, first day of school being August 15th. With the start of the school year Marshall High School athletics kicks off their football and volleyball seasonthe second week of school. Throughout the summer you could pass by the school and see teams practicing and preparing for their upcoming season.

Moonshiners at SC Historical Society

The Searcy County Historical Society will meet Friday, August 26, at 7:00 pm in the First Christian Church, Marshall. The speaker will be Rachel Whitaker, research specialist at Shiloh Museum, Springdale, Arkansas. She will talk about Ozark moonshiners (wildcat whiskey makers), what they made and how they made it. Ms. Whitaker has replaced Susan Young who retired last summer. Susan was a popular presenter at the Searcy County Historical Society meetings and we are sure Rachel Whitaker will also be a favorite.

Legislative Update

The Governor is calling the General Assembly into an Extraordinary Session next week to address the use of surplus funds to provide tax relief and funding for school safety measures. The Arkansas School Safety Commission was reinstated in the wake of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

First sign placement at BNR

On, Thursday, May 18, 2021 was the first placement of a sign on the BNR based on an agreement between the Searcy County Historical Society and the BNR. The sign was to commemorate the homestead of the great, great grandfather John Morgan Butler. JM Butler had a homestead on and around South Maumee from 1895 through 1920. Ivan Crowdis is the great, great grandson of John Morgan Butler and his first wife Nancy Catherine Gray. Tami Burham and Lorayne Madrigal are the great, great granddaughters of John Morgan and his second wife Melissa Margaret Ray.

SC Cattlemen hears from NRCS

The Searcy County Cattlemen’s Association met Tuesday July 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Marshall Assembly of God Church. There were 29 members and guests present. The meeting was sponsored by The Buffalo ConservationDistrict(NRCS). The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. by President Adam Redman. Members and guests were asked to rise for the Pledge of Allegiance and the blessing of the meal. The Pledge was recited in unison and Pastor Chris Reed asked the blessing for the meal. The meal consisted of Cheeseburgers and Chips with chocolate pie for dessert.
