Newbie no more

Danny and I had a good, quick little trip to Tyler Bend yesterday, something we don’t take for granted, that a trip to the Buffalo can be a quick, little spur-of-the-moment thing instead of a planned day or days long event. After the heat driving us inside for two months, it was finally a day when the thought of getting outside for fun was just plain exciting. So, we grabbed Leo on a leash and took off to check the water level and do a quick hike.

SC “Unforgoatable” Farm Family

On Tuesday, May 3 The 75th annual Arkansas Farm Family of year program named the 2022 County Farm Families of the year. The Searcy County Farm Family of the year is Shane and Michelle Kelley. The families were visited June 6-9 to determine the eight district farm families of the year and they were announced June 14. On December 8 the winners will be announced at the state Farm Family of the Year luncheon. First established in 1947, Arkansas’ Farm Family of the Year program is the longest running effort of its kind in the nation. The program sponsors are Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, AgHeritage Farm Credit Services, Farm Credit Services of Western Arkansas, Farm Credit Midsouth and Arkansas Farm Bureau with the cooperation of the program partners Arkansas Press Association, University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, USDA Rural Development, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Arkansas Department of Workforce Education and the Arkansas Agriculture Department. The Kelley family entails Shane, Michelle, Rylee, and Tate Kelley of 4 K Farms. Like many families in Searcy County, they started off farming cattle. They decided they wanted to involve their children in showing at the local county fair. Now they all are responsible for maintaining the herd. After speaking with residents and friends they thought dairy goats would a beneficial animal to start with. They bought their first two registered Nubian goats in 2015. They were raised as bottle babies and their children showed them at the fair. That is what sparked their love of dairy goats. The following year they purchased two more Nubians and an alpine and a toggenburg. They kept showing, started raising, and milking them. As their establishment grew, they started making goat milk soap and ultrasounding the animals to check for pregnancy and more.

Snowball news

Another week has passed with no rain, things are getting crispier and crispier. There do appear to be a few chances in the forecast this week, so fingers crossed and say a little prayer that we get some rain. Our pastures need a good rain, multiple days in a row to come back from their current dry stage.
