Buffalo National River as I remember it about 80 years ago

Part Eight: While some food items were scarce, others did not require rationing, and Americans adjusted accordingly. “Red Stamp” rationing covered all meats, butter, fat, and oils, and with some exceptions, cheese. Each person could spend a certain amount of points weekly with expiration dates to consider. “Blue Stamp” rationing covered canned, bottled, frozen fruits and vegetables, plus juices and dry beans, and such processed foods as soups, baby food and ketchup. Ration stamps became a kind of currency with each family being issued a “War Ration Book.” Each stamp authorized a purchase of rationed goods in the quantity and time designated, and the book guaranteed each family its fair share of goods made scarce, thanks to the war. Rationing also was determined by a point system.

2022 Ancestor Fair On

The 2022 North Arkansas Ancestor Fair is on this year after missing two years due to covid. Sponsored by the Searcy County Historical Society, a 501 (c) 3 organization. The North Arkansas Ancestor Fair will be held Saturday, June 4, in Veterans Hall, Marshall, Arkansas. It is a free event, both for providers and for seekers. The Ancestor Fair’s schedule is much simpler this year. There will be no speakers, only free tables, chairs and WiFi for information providers and information seekers.

Searcy County Extension office offers ServSafe Manager Course

ServSafe has been the industry standard since 1919 in training millions of people how to receive, store, prepare, and serve food safely. Through the Cooperative Extension Service, we offer training and certifications for the ServSafe Food Handler, ServSafe Manager, and ServSafe Instructor & Proctor programs. The Arkansas Department of Health is now requiring each food service facility to have at least one supervisory employee who has Certified Food Manager training.

Searcy County Retired Teachers

Searcy County Retired Teachers will have its regular meeting on Friday, May 13 in the Leslie United Methodist Fellowship Hall at 11:30. Lunch is catered by the United Methodist Women and will be served at 11:30, $12. Our guest speakers will be Danny Townsend, ARTA Vice President and Mark Gammill, Area II Director.
