Old Bones at Historical Society

What can we learn from old bones found at an Indian site? Dr. Mel Zabecki will tell us at the Searcy County Historical Society meeting at 7:00 p./m., Friday, April 22, at the First Christian Church in Marshall. Dr Zabecki is the Arkansas State Archeologist stationed at the Arkansas Archeological Survey in Fayetteville. A PhD graduate from the University of Arkansas, she began her career as an ancient Egyptian bioarcheologist working at Egyptian cemeteries. Later working as Park Interpreter for Arkansas State Parks, she learned about American and Arkansas archeology. Mel joined the Arkansas archeological Survey as its Education Outreach Coordinator, then moved into the State Archeologist position.

Veterans group to host Candidate’s forum

On Saturday April 23rd the Searcy County Veterans Memorial Assoc. will be hosting an open forum with candidates who are running for office in the May primary election. According to James Fountain Vice President of SVCMA, this is open to the public and everyone is welcome. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a free spaghetti dinner, a pie auction at 7 p.m. then a question-and-answer session with the candidates. We have reached out to the candidates running for office at all levels of Government, Federal, State, and County. Not all can attend but we have commitments from some, Fountain added. This is your chance to visit with the candidates and ask the tough questions to learn about their political ideology. This is part of the process that makes The United States’ Democratic republic work. You the voter making an informed choice for public office. So please come to the Veterans Memorial Hall on April 23rd and educate yourself. For those who are running for office, if you have not heard from us consider this your invitation, this will be a clean event with no mudslinging allowed.

Searcy Co. Senior Center

The Searcy County Senior Activity Center is open for inside dining. Hot meals to those over 60 years of age Monday through Friday from 11:30. a.m. until 12 noon and indoor dining is from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. The center is still providing hot meals for the elderly in Searcy County for a suggested $4 donation. SC Library supplies learning tools In August 2021 the

In August 2021 the Searcy County Library received a ARPA grant in the amount of $10,000. Since the grant was awarded, library has been updating some technology to improve the education for all grade levels in the community. They have DVDs on a variety of subjects, interactive toys, DVD players, and headphones available to check out. Go and check out the new collection of educational material. Local residents found dead

On Saturday afternoon, April 2, a call from an acquaintance led local law enforcement to a home in Marshall where they found two bodies. The Marshall Police Department responded to the residence of Jean Tibbs on Range Street (pictured above) in Marshall where they found her body along with the body of James Belt. According to law enforcement, Both Tibbs and Belt, who resided on Red Bluff Road, had been dead for a period of time. Cause of death is currently undetermined. The bodies have been sent to the State Crime Lab to determine the cause of death. The incident is under investigation by the Marshall Police Department and the Arkansas State Police.
