What to Know About Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

There’s much to look forward to when winter begins. Outdoor enthusiasts may relish a return to the slopes to ski or snowboard each winter, while others praise the crisp fresh air and lack of insects as more conducive to activities like hiking. Winter indeed has plenty to offer, but some people find that less daylight has an adverse effect on their mood. The National Institutes of Mental Health notes that shifts in mood and behavior that align with changes in the seasons could be indicative of seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD. What is SAD? Johns Hopkins Medicine characterizes SAD as a form of depression in which individuals’ mood and behavior changes when the seasons change. The NIMH notes SAD is sometimes referred to as the ‘winter blues.’ Is SAD exclusive to winter? Though SAD can affect people at any time of year, the NIMH reports that most cases of SAD start to affect people in late fall or early winter before symptoms begin to subside during the spring and summer. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes researchers believe the shorter days and thus fewer hours of daylight that occur each winter set off a chemical change in the brain that leads to a person experiencing symptoms of depression. What are the symptoms of SAD? The NIMH points out that, since SAD is a type of depression, symptoms of the condition include those associated with depression. Such symptoms include: A persistent sad, anxious or ‘empty’ mood most of the day. This occurs every day for at least two weeks.

Searcy County Humane Society

The Searcy County Humane Society is a local shelter for stray and dumped dogs. When dogs are brought to the shelter’s attention, whether that be someone calling it in; another shelter in need; or a dog being left at the shelter, it is Tina Oliver’s job to complete health checks. Tina Oliver is the current manager of the Searcy County Humane Society. Health checks consist of getting the dogs their required shots including rabies, heart worm tests, the medications that they need, as well getting spayed or neutered. The dogs are then able to be adopted or they are sent up north to Massachusetts.

Memories and Meals

My grandmother’s love and passion for cooking passed down to my mother, who then passed that passion down to my sister and me. My mother’s passion for cooking is very similar to how my grandmother felt about cooking. She, as many mothers are, was the main chef in my household growing up, therefore her passion for cooking was centered around savory meals meant to feed a family of five with leftovers for work lunches. However, over time, as many things do, her cooking evolved into experimentation with different cultures. It is these different passions that formed mine and my sisters love for cooking. Over time my sister has experimented and found a love for baking bread, while I have found a passion for desserts. It’s family memories, passions, and emotions that shape us today, even in something as simple as food. Here are four recipes from my sister and me that were shaped by our family memories.

Christmas, 2024 has come and gone – some have already started putting away decorations, others wait until the New Year. This season is always filled with both joy and family gatherings for many as well as loneliness and loss for some. Cozyhome Church lost one of our own on Christmas Day this year – Ben Charles Hall went to his home in glory after a long illness. His seat at our church has been vacant for a while, as he was ill first at home, and later in Springfield, but his influence in the community and church will always be remembered. Now he is walking the streets of gold and reacquainting with old friends who had gone on before him. Ben Charles was a faithful follower of Christ and a board member of Cozyhome Church. His daughter, Melissa, asked that I share this: “We will be having a memorial service later; at that time there will be an obituary.”
