Old Town St. Joe News

John Teague has been feeling under the weather and made a visit to the doctor. He is home better. The number 1 selling book, the bible, is selling greater than ever. Since all the worldly events are following the signs of that book. The St. Joe Baptist Church had a special service and dinner last Saturday night. Dec. 14. My grandson, Gavin Kidder, has to go to work at Harrison on a bridge construction crew so he is a working man again and enjoys the job. He is really good to his grandpa. He brings him supper a lot of the time Shiloh Arthur has been sick the last few days, so let’s keep him in prayer Dec 25 1776 Washington and the continental army crossed the Delaware to capture the Hessian army. Losing only two men, and they died due to the cold and getting wet. This began at 6 am and continued until early on the 26th at Trenton. This boosted morale and reignited the revolution.

Reading is a beloved pastime that can positively affect cognitive health and even help to reduce stress. Though those benefits are largely associated with adults, reading can be equally beneficial to children, even those who have yet to learn how to read. According to the Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, infants pick up on language earlier than researchers once realized, and hearing language is important as their brains prepare them to speak. Reading also supports word learning and preliteracy skills in older children. The ECLKC notes that when adults read to children, they typically speak words they would not otherwise use in typical discourse. That helps children expand their vocabularies, even before they learn to read on their own.

The Cozyhome Connection

The old barn outside my mother’s house is mostly just a shell these days, with holes all around and the boards leaning every which way and metal roofing clapping in every breeze. But back in the late 50’s and early 60’s, it was home to a family of fourteen – two parents, eight boys and their four sisters. Charles Dye, another Cozyhome old-timer, was born in Marshall, but lived in that barn with his brothers, sisters, and parents until he was 14 and they moved to a cabin out past Rock Creek. The family later traded that property to the Stills family so they could move closer to Rock Creek on the Aunt Faye Road. While living in that barn, Charles remembers getting drinking and cooking water from the Turkey Pen Springs and catching rainwater in the cistern for laundry and baths. When bringing relatives to see the old homesite one day, he pointed out where the old cook stove once sat, where the fire happened, and where their access to the attic for sleeping was located.

Memories and Meals

Food carries memories and emotions. It carries feelings of love and memories of loved ones both here and gone. My grandmother believed this and she wanted to share those memories and emotions with my sister and me. She did this by filling two composition notebooks, one for my sister and one for me, with handwritten recipes from our extended family members. These recipes have helped keep my grandmother’s memory and love alive after she passed. In order to share this I have typed 4 of her recipes that she shared with us.

When Did Yes Become Yeah?

Psalm 1: 1-2 Blessed is the man who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.

Snowball News

As I type this we are expecting our first winter storm. There’s always some excitement about snow, no school, snowmen, sledding, but there’s a lot of us that are also farmers and ranchers and snow brings zero excitement. Snow is always fun for a little while, but when you think about the toll that the added work brings to folks caring for livestock, it’s not that fun. The cold snap we’ve just had has been a royal pain. I’ve busted ice for critters every morning and every night. I’ve gotten where I’ve just taken horse water buckets inside the barn to thaw during the day.

Well, we’ve got a week of 2025 behind us! Now it looks like we will get some snow. It might be a lot and it might not be, but I went to town and got a few things just in case it snows a lot. The station has said 3-5 inches and now 5 -7 inches. So who knows! Doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
