Around our town

Hello to all of you Marshall Mountain Wave readers and greetings from the Jewel of the Ozarks. Leslie, Arkansas. The weather has been so lovely this past week although it did warm up a bit by the end of the week. The weather often does that in September, they call this Indian Summer but that is a bit racist, I prefer the term Blackberry Summer, that is when it cools down a lot and then heats up again. When that happens, the blackberries will often flower and produce a second blush of fruit. My blackberries do have a lot of flowers on them so we might get another small crop of berries this year before the first frost. I for one am looking forward to the much cooler temperatures of Autumn.

2024 SC Fair Tractor Driving Contest Winners

On Saturday, August 31 The Searcy County Fair tractor driving contest commenced. Pheil Reade with Searcy County Equipment started this program for the Searcy County FFA members roughly 40 plus years ago. After Pheil’s death they have kept it going in his name. Pheil loved to put this contest on and give out prizes to all the winners and hats to all the nonwinners. They honor Pheil by keeping this contest going for the youth of Searcy County. Some of the first people to help Pheil put the event together were Randy Smyth, Johnny Neel, and Sid Lowrance. Pictured above (left to right) is 2024 Senior winners: Mr. Eddings, Ian Antry 4th place, Trace Filtes 3rd place, Jacob Campbell 2nd place, Payton Hunter 1st place. Chicken gets spicy and smoky

Everyone should have a go-to whole chicken recipe in their culinary repertoire. While roasting a chicken certainly gets the job done, it’s hard to beat the flavor profile of a chicken cooked low and slow on a smoker. The chicken can be enjoyed right off the bone, and leftovers can be pulled or chopped to use in enchiladas, tacos, salads, and more.

Prostate cancer screening tends to show net benefit years later

DEAR DR. ROACH: Regarding your recent column about prostate cancer, could you please clarify a statement that has created some concern and confusion for me? The statement is: “Screening begins to have a net benefit after about 10 or 15 years.” About 10 or 15 years after what exactly? I had surgery about 18 months ago at the age of 65, and I’m very lucky not to have incontinence or erectile dysfunction, thanks to the nerve-sparing surgery.

Around our town

Hello to of you Marshall Mountain Wave readers and greetings from the Jewel of the Ozarks, Leslie, Arkansas. Wow the weather has been so beautifully mild this past week. The mornings have been cool and pleasant, and the high temperatures have only been in the 80s. If it had been in the 80s a few months ago we would have all thought it was hot but after the very intense kind of brutal summer heat we have had this year. I am just hoping that it rains soon, because we are dry and have not had much rain of late. We are probably going to get some rain from the latest hurricane in the gulf that just came to shore a couple of days ago. But in the meantime I am going to enjoy the lovely Fall like weather here at the very tail end of Summer.
