Searcy County Arkansas is a total of around 669 miles. Our rural county is a very rural and beautiful area. However, it can make it a little difficult when it comes to fires and emergencies. That’s why it’s spread out by communities. There are over 10 volunteer fire departments in Searcy County. Almost every community has a volunteer fire department. These departments are very compassionate, hardworking, and reliable. However, most of the volunteer fire departments are very understaffed and are always looking for new recruits. On Saturday May 4, 2023, the North Arkansas College Adult Education Program held its GED graduation ceremony in the Pioneer Pavilion at North Arkansas College. This year’s ceremony honored graduates from the year 2023-2024 as well as recent citizenship recipients.

The Landis Volunteer Fire Department has been serving the Landis, Thola and Shiloh communities of Searcy County Arkansas for about 40 years. We greatly appreciate the many firefighters, first responders and support personnel that have served our communities in these many years. Pictured is a few of the current firefighters and one of the fire trucks in service. Our department is currently working to improve equipment and to train firefighters to be able to accomplish the mission of the fire department. Our mission is to save lives and to protect property and the environment from fires.

On Thursday May 2, 2024 at or about 00:07 Officer CJ Knighton with the Marshall Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a 1999 Chevrolet truck beige in color. The occupants of the vehicle were identified as a Joan Miller and Chris Wyatt of Missouri.

The Morning Star Volunteer Fire Department was born in the mid-1970s with some 20-30 dedicated volunteers and they are one of the first departments outside of the towns Marshall and Leslie. When they received notification of a fire, Charles and Billie Young leaped into action because they lived across from the “mini station” which was at the east end of what had been the old Hobart Marshall Grocery Store. This small structure housed a vintage fire truck and vintage tanker. Charles would head to the station and Billie utilized the “call tree” method of notifying the other firefighters of the call. Then in 1980 we received their first paging system. Some years later they received from the Arkansas Health Department their license for their first ambulance which they maintained and operated for some ten years. They cover approximately 200 square miles of land which includes part of the Buffalo National River.
