The fall colors are so pretty right now. And the weather is not too bad but that is about to change they say. Around Halloween the cooler weather will be here and we may get that frost they are talking about. With lows in the 20’s and 30’s and highs in the 40’s and 50’s.
We have been really busy in the Genealogy Department. I enjoyed Mrs. Jo Watts stopping in to visit. The Canaan Church had a 150-year celebration, not too long ago Dr. Tom Leslie and his wife stopped by to donate the Leslie Bible to our Genealogy department. It had sat on the church pulpit for 150 years. Thank you so much. Mrs. Jo stopped in to take the bible to the celebration so it would have its place in the celebration. We here at the Library are getting a display case ready to house the bible.
Also we have other folks sharing their family information with us. I believe we could work forty forevers and still have work to do. Our area is rich in history. We are working hard to get it documented and preserved. Thanks again for all who share their history.
One project we are working on now is to document the medical folks of our county and those from other counties that interacted with our county. Witts Springs sometimes went to the Hector area and vice versa, and the same with the Dennard area. We know that Dr. Fendley had a goat cart he sometimes used, and Dr. Reves of the Dennard area had a horse that would take him home if he fell asleep after a day of delivering babies, patching up folks after the Saturday night fights, and other maladies. We had midwives like Martha Fox. Also dentists and opticians traveled down from Harrison to stay a few days and see their patients. Many times, I listened to Mr. A C Watts talk of an Indian doctor from out in Oklahoma, this doctor would stay at the Lindsey Hotel and prescribe medicines to those who stopped in to see him. Anyway, we are just getting started on this project but it seems like we are going to enjoy working on it very much.
The church that is across from the Library was once a hospital. Dr. Bing delivered many babies there. Before the hospital was at that location it was in the field between the church and the Bratton Hotel. The hotel had a funeral home as well. So there was a hospital, funeral home and a hotel all at the same place.
Mr. Robert Baker told me that during the 1918 flu outbreak that a type of triage was set up of tents to house the sick as they did not have a place to put everyone.
We will write more about this as we gather up other information.
This is all the information we have for now. Have a blessed week.
